Adult Literacy Services

Anixter Center's Literacy program provides a customized curriculum combining literacy, tutoring and life skills to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Participants and volunteer tutors usually meet once a week for an hour (or more) and cover such topics as:

  • Literacy (life skills, journaling, creative writing)
  • Tutoring (reading, writing, math, geography, history, computers, GED preparation)

Over 20 years ago, Anixter Center realized that literacy was essential in its efforts to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. To answer that need, Anixter Center created the first and only Chicago area literacy program that focuses on the unique needs of individuals with disabilities. This hybrid curriculum takes literacy and tutoring beyond books and into the lives of its participants. Goals can vary from the ability to understand prescriptive drug instructions, reading a map to plan a pathway to a destination and back, or finding a job.

Anixter Center Literacy is open M-F 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and on Thursdays until 7 PM for evening classes or matches.
