Domestic Violence Counselor, Chicago Hearing Society

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of 1 year of direct work experience in the Deaf community with a strong knowledge of community resources. Fluency in American Sign Language, prefer ASL as a first language and knowledge of Deaf culture. BA degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, counseling or related field.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

Provides crisis intervention, problem solving, short-term counseling to victims of domestic violence.
Refers victims to appropriate community resources for services such as emergency shelter, long-term counseling, housing assistance.
Insures communication access to all related services including medical services and to police and court proceedings, usually through the use of sign language interpreters.
Advocates on behalf of victim to insure his/her rights and interests are protected within the Illinois Domestic Violence Act and in interaction with other service providers.
Educates victims about their rights and responsibilities in order to encourage self-advocacy.
